The photochemical re ectance index as a measure of photosynthetic light use eYciency for plants with varying foliar nitrogen contents
نویسندگان
چکیده
A linear relationship (r2=0.79, p<0.001) between the photochemical re ectance index (PRI) and photosynthetic light use eYciency (LUE) was found for eight plant species that exhibit a signi cant range in foliage physical properties and nitrogen content. Experiments were conducted under arti cial sunlight in a climate laboratory, using narrow-band (3.2 nm) canopy-level re ectance data to calculate the PRI, and averaged measurements of leaf net photosynthesis to obtain the LUE. If the PRI is calculated using a 10 nm bandwidth, simulating for example data from the Airborne Visible/Infrared Imaging Spectroradiometer (AVIRIS), a weaker but still signi cant relationship results (r2=0.67, p<0.001).

Photochemical reflectance index as an indirect estimator of foliar isoprenoid emissions at the ecosystem level.
Terrestrial plants re-emit around 1-2% of the carbon they fix as isoprene and monoterpenes. These emissions have major roles in the ecological relationships among living organisms and in atmospheric chemistry and climate, and yet their actual quantification at the ecosystem level in different regions is far from being resolved with available models and field measurements. Here we provide eviden...
متن کاملEVects of nutrient addition on leaf chemistry, morphology, and photosynthetic capacity of three bog shrubs
Plants in nutrient-poor environments typically have low foliar nitrogen (N) concentrations, long-lived tissues with leaf traits designed to use nutrients eYciently, and low rates of photosynthesis. We postulated that increasing N availability due to atmospheric deposition would increase photosynthetic capacity, foliar N, and speciWc leaf area (SLA) of bog shrubs. We measured photosynthesis, fol...
متن کاملNitrogen Deposition Enhances Photosynthesis in Moso Bamboo but Increases Susceptibility to Other Stress Factors
Atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition can increase the susceptibility of vascular plants to other stresses, but the physiological basis of such a response remains poorly understood. This study was designed to clarify the physiological mechanisms and to evaluate bioindicators of N deposition impact on vascular plants. We evaluate multiple physiological responses to ~4 years of simulated additional...
متن کاملLeaf physiological versus morphological acclimation to high-light exposure at different stages of foliar development in oak.
We investigated light acclimation in seedlings of the temperate oak Quercus petraea (Matt.) Liebl. and the co-occurring sub-Mediterranean oak Quercus pyrenaica Willd. Seedlings were raised in a greenhouse for 1 year in either 70 (HL) or 5.3% (LL) of ambient irradiance of full sunlight, and, in the following year, subsets of the LL-grown seedlings were transferred to HL either before leaf flushi...
متن کاملEffects of exogenous salicylic acid on antioxidative responses, phenolic metabolism and photochemical activity of strawberry under salt stress
To further clarify the specific photochemical mechanisms of salicylic acid (SA)-mediated adaptation to salt stress, this experiment was conducted to examine the effect of SA (100 and 500 μM) on photosynthesis, antioxidative capacity and phenolic metabolism in strawberry plants under salt stress (50 mM). The results showe...
